Controlled Cable Tension
The Electric RHGSE automatically maintains approximately 40 to 60 pounds (18–27 kg) of cable tension during extension.
Maintaining positive tension throughout the extension process provides several important benefits:
- Prevents excessive compression of the outer wire strands by the rescue hoist.
- Reduces the tendency for the cable’s outer strands to unwind or “milking” toward the ball end.
- Promotes more uniform cable winding.
- Supports longer cable service life by maintaining proper cable construction during maintenance.
Studies and operational experience have shown that maintaining cable tension above approximately 22 pounds (10 kg) during extension helps minimize cable strand movement and contributes to improved wire rope longevity.
Flexible Power Options
The Electric RHGSE operates from standard single-phase AC electrical power available in most maintenance facilities and may also be powered from an aircraft electrical source when appropriate.
In addition, the system retains the capability for manual operation, allowing maintenance to continue if electrical power is unavailable or when remote operation is required.
Capstans and Pressure Roller Arms
The load is transmitted to the cable using two capstan drive rollers. Each roller is precisely sized to accommodate the cable and feeding it into the rotating tub. The capstans are made from a material that maintains high friction between the cable and the rollers, even if the cable is lubricated. The cable is held tight against the capstans by two pressure roller arms at the entry and exit tangent points where the cable makes contact.
The Electric RHGSE can use either three or four groove Capstans, depending on the model purchased or if upgraded.
Three Groove Capstans
The original three-groove capstan was designed for routine rescue hoist maintenance where cable loads typically range between 200 and 300 pounds (91–136 kg).
For operators performing maintenance primarily within this load range, the three-groove capstan provides reliable performance and remains an effective, economical solution.
However, evolving maintenance requirements have increased the frequency of higher-load operations. Rescue hoist manufacturers may require:
- Periodic clutch verification procedures for Goodrich hoist models.
- Cable pretensioning at approximately 500 to 550 pounds (227–249 kg) during scheduled maintenance intervals.
Under these sustained higher loads, the three-groove capstan experiences increased wear over time.
- Ideal for operators performing routine maintenance at lower cable loads.
- Well suited for smaller fleets or organizations that infrequently perform high-load maintenance.
- Available on only Electric RHGSE models.
Why Higher Loads Increase Wear
When high cable loads are applied repeatedly, the first groove of the capstan experiences the greatest contact pressure.
Over time, this can lead to:
- Accelerated capstan wear
- Increased cable slippage
- Greater cable twist between the capstan and the RotaTub
- Reduced maintenance efficiency
As capstan wear increases, maintaining consistent cable traction becomes more difficult during high-load maintenance
procedures.
Four Groove Capstans
To address these higher-load maintenance requirements, Zephyr developed the four-groove capstan.
By adding an additional cable wrap around the capstan, the system provides greater cable contact, significantly reducing slippage while distributing the load more evenly across the capstan.
In addition, the first groove of the four-groove capstan is manufactured from stainless steel to resist wear in the area subjected to the highest loading.
The result is:
- Reduced capstan wear
- Improved traction during high-load operation
- Less cable slippage
- Reduced cable twist
- Improved long-term reliability
- Lower maintenance requirements for the capstan itself
The four-groove design has demonstrated superior performance in applications where high cable loads are routinely used.
- Recommended for operators who routinely perform maintenance using higher cable loads.
- Provides greater durability and reduced wear under repeated high-load operation.
- Standard on all Hydraulic RHGSE models.
- Available as an option on Electric RHGSE models.
Load Indication System
The load indication system uses a load cell to measure the torque in the system and visually displays the load in the cable.
The electrical power required is 110 VAC up to 10 amps or 220 VAC up to 5 amps. The operator plugs the unit in to the shop power source and attaches the rescue hoist cable and then actuates the extend switch and the system is ready to extend the entire length of cable. Then the operator engages the clutch system and the cable can be retracted while the load is displayed on the digital readout. The system includes the ability to wash, dry, and lubricate the cable and is compatible with the MagSens rescue hoist cable inspection system.
Lubridryer Assembly
The cable is cleaned, dried and can be lubricated using the Lubridryer. The Lubridryer includes replaceable pads that clean the wire and also can be used to provide lubrication to the cable. The Lubridryer is equipped with an oil shut off valve in order to provide you the flexibility of starting or stopping the lubricant from being released.
Electric RHGSE models require a customer-supplied compressed air source to dry the rescue hoist cable after washing and lubrication.
Unlike the Hydraulic RHGSE, Electric models do not include an onboard air compressor, making them a lighter and more economical option while still providing complete rescue hoist cable maintenance capabilities.
